Leclerc died of yellow fever at Cap.
Haitian
While the Independents were drawing their lines tighter around the town of Cap, General Leclerc came to die on 11 brumaire (2 November) of yellow fever. “A short time before his death,” says a French general, “he expressed regrets over the false courses which had directed the counsels of the government in the aim of his expedition. He groaned over an enterprise undertaken upon men, and by men, worthy of a better fate, by reason of the services they had rendered and could still have rendered to France. These regrets were touching (1).”
