Law grants foreign ships the right of echelle at Port-à-Piment

Haitian

Port-à-Piment is a central point which, besides the importance of its commerce, enjoys a port of easy access. For these reasons the Legislative Body passed a law on 28 October 1885 granting the right of call (droit d’échelle) to foreign ships for the export of dyewoods and other timber at Port-à-Piment. Foreign and other ships that go there to take on cargo must make their declaration of entry at the port of the Cayes, which is the nearest port open to foreign commerce, just as on departure they must take their clearance card at the customs house of the Cayes.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Coteaux (les).
