Law establishes 14 school districts
An ignorant man and an ignorant people are equally incapable of managing their affairs well. That is why public instruction has been the object of the government’s solicitude since the foundation of the Republic. For the direction of this service there is a corps of inspectors distributed through the 14 school districts established by the law of 24 September 1884. The inspectors are charged in particular with ensuring that the programs of study are carried out and that the methods followed in all the establishments are excellent. In the communes where no inspector resides, a local commission of 5 members has been instituted, intended to exercise active supervision over the public and private schools. These local commissions come under the inspectors, and the latter under the Secretary of State for Public Instruction.
