Rébecca perished on 21 May, protesting the sanctity of his enterprise; his very executioners were left astonished at his heroic assurance before the fatal block. Unhappily, I say it with grief, military beheading, that useless torture made to perpetuate barbarity, of which the French of 1802 had set the example, did not stop there: to how many other noble heads did Christophe not inflict it?
