Isabella orders Ovando to compel Taíno work for wages as free persons
… commanding each Cacique to have charge of a certain number of the Indians, that he make them go to work wherever need be, and that, on feast days and such days as seemed fitting, they gather to hear and be instructed in the matters of the faith, in the places appointed, and that the Cacique deliver the number of Indians assigned him to the person or persons he should name, that they work at whatever such persons should command, being paid the wage that he should assess, which they should do and fulfil as free persons, as they were, and not as serfs; and that he cause them to be well treated, and those of them who were Christians better than the others, and that he neither consent nor give place that any person do them wrong or harm, or any other injury, and that the one and the other do not otherwise, etc.”
