Hurricane ravages the South
Haitian
The climate is humid and mild, the air fairly healthy, except in marshy places. Exposed to the winds of the North and of the South, this department is often visited, in the rainy season, by squalls so furious that they sometimes overturn trees and houses. Thus in 1810, in 1817, on 13 August 1831 and in September 1878, hurricanes ravaged several points of its surface. On these occasions the government suspended the collection of license duties and of the rental tax in the arrondissements of the Cayes, of Tiburon, of Aquin and of the Grand’Anse.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SUD.
