Hédouville embarked on the frigate Bravoure to leave the colony, and the frigates were able to put to sea on 6 brumaire (27 October).
The next day, 2 brumaire, the regiments and the bands which occupied Haut-du-Cap came to seize the forts Saint-Michel and Bel-Air; they skirted the Bande-du-Nord and threatened to enter the town by the Providence suburb. Hédouville, dreading a new 20 June, decided to embark. He descends from the National Palace, crosses the town amid the dismayed citizens, and goes aboard the frigate *la Bravoure*, on which flew the pennant of Commander Faure, division commander. General Leveillé (1), Squadron Commander Kayer-Larivière (2), the agent’s guard, the remnants of the 141st demi-brigade, the artillery, the public functionaries also embark. Toussaint then makes his entry with his *sans-culottes*. He goes to the municipalité, deplores the public misfortunes, and has the agent invited, in vain, to come down again (3). On 6 brumaire (27 October) the frigates were only able to put to sea; first the *Syrène* and the *Cocarde* went out at daybreak to draw the attention of the English cruising force which was blockading the roadstead of the Cap; the *Bravoure* got under way afterward and managed to escape contrary to the hopes of Toussaint (1).
