Haitian army shattered at Santiago de los Caballeros

On 30 March 1844 a Haitian army under General Jean-Louis Pierrot advanced on Santiago de los Caballeros in two columns of roughly 2,000 men each. The Dominican commander José María Imbert had been warned of the attack and had the town fortified. The Haitians were cut apart: more than 600 dead against a single Dominican wounded. They abandoned the field the next day and were harried the whole way back. The east had declared independence on 27 February; this is the day Haiti lost the war to hold the island together.
