Gunmen storm the National Penitentiary and take the former prime minister
Haitian
In broad daylight armed men attacked Haiti’s National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince. Poorly armed guards ran; one off-duty guard was killed. The attackers pulled out former prime minister Yvon Neptune and former interior minister Jocelerme Privert, both jailed without trial since the coup that removed Aristide the year before. MINUSTAH said as many as 481 of the roughly 1,200 inmates got out. Neptune and Privert asked to go back, negotiated through the Chilean embassy, and were returned to their cells within hours.
