Guacanagarí sends two gold masks and says some Christians died of sickness
… they were answered that they should come aboard, for he was there, and they would not until the Admiral stood at the side of the ship, and when they knew him, who was well enough known, by his authoritative person, then two of them came aboard the ship, and give him each a mask, which they call guayças, very well made and with some gold, as was said of them above, presenting them on behalf of king Guacanagarí with great greetings, as many as they could express; when the Admiral asked them about the Christians, which was what pained him, they answered that some were dead of sickness, and others had gone inland with their women, and even with many women. The Admiral well sensed that they must all be dead, but he dissembled for the time being and sent them back, giving them a present of brass basins that they always held in great esteem, and other trifles that were to please the lord Guacanagarí, and to them also he gave things with which they went away glad, then, that same night.
