Great and small forts bombarded; Jean-Baptiste Louverture killed
Haitian
From the 22nd to the 24th of March the great and the small fort were cannonaded and bombarded with vigor. Colonel Jean-Baptiste Louverture was killed by a blast of grapeshot. The indigenous artillery could not contend against the superiority of that of the French. The small fort, open on all sides, was no longer tenable. Lamartinière abandoned it in the night of the 22nd and returned with 150 men into the great fort, where he brought confidence and enthusiasm. The ramparts of this latter fortification were in a lamentable state; there was no longer any shelter against cannonballs; as provisions and munitions began to run short, the garrison ate horse, and pebbles replaced bullets.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Crête-à-Pierrot (la).
