Government troops at Pont de l’Estère attacked by three divisions
The government troops quartered at the Bac d’Aquin and at the Carrefour Mapou (Pont de l’Estère) during the insurrection of the Northerners in February 1889, intercepting all direct communication between the arrondissements of the Gonaives, of Saint Marc and of Dessalines, were vigorously attacked on 1 March at 7 o’clock in the morning by 3 divisions: one sallying from the Gonaives, another from the Petite Rivière, the 3rd from Marchand. These 3 divisions were successively beaten and dispersed, leaving on the battlefield a great number of dead and wounded, flags, drums and bugles. In this affair the 3rd regiment distinguished itself particularly. However, these positions soon fell into the power of the Northerners, and General O. Piquant, minister of the Interior, having his headquarters at the Grande-Saline, found himself cut off from that town and obliged to defend himself in Dessalines.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PONT de l’ESTERE (le).
