Gérin sends Pétion his resignation as commander of the department of the South, and Pétion replies the same day accepting it.

Haitian

“Jérémie, 27 May 1808, Year VI.

“Alexandre Pétion, President of Haiti, to General of Division Gérin.

“Citizen General,

“I have just received your letter of this day. I regret infinitely that the weakening of your sight and the number of your years force you to ask for your resignation. I recognize, General, the important services that you have rendered to your country. I thought that you could still render it more. If some other motive, which you have not set out in your letter, had prompted your retirement, I am persuaded that you would have communicated it to me with that fraternity which binds us and that frankness which characterizes you.

“I express to you my regrets, General, and I am sensible of the attention you showed in waiting for my arrival in the department that you commanded before retiring from the service.
