General Whyte and Commodore Ford blockade Port-au-Prince and take Fort Bizoton
On 31 May the English General Whyte and Commodore Ford came to blockade Port-au-Prince. They cannonaded the place and directed three columns against it and seized fort Bizoton. Santhonax and Polvérel, no longer able to hold out in the place, withdrew to the Charbonnière (Pétion-ville). On 5 June, the English army, 4,000 men strong, entered Port Républicain, and fired on all whom it met in the streets. General Whyte fortified the town on the east and on the south. He raised at Morne-à-Tuf a blockhouse in the middle of the square of the interior cemetery and, to the east, at the summit of the morne of the habitation Covin, and a fort that dominates the town and the surrounding countryside. This is the fort National.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
