General Martial Besse born at Terrier Rouge
Haitian
History. Terrier Rouge is the birthplace of General Martial Besse, who was born there on 15 September 1759. He was educated and a member of the Council of State of Christophe. He was then the most senior general officer of the country; he was the cellmate of Toussaint Louverture at the château de Joux. It was he who recopied and corrected the memoirs of the “greatest of the Blacks”, memoirs that cast so great a light on the events of that time. He was believed to be white. It is also the birthplace of General Anselme Prophète, who was minister of war under Légitime.
Rouzier tells this under the entry TERRIER ROUGE.
