General Ferrand dies at Palo Hincado
The port from which the products of the commune of Santa Cruz del Seibo are shipped is formed by the Romana river and by an arm of the sea that enters there, opposite Saint Catherine Island. Distance from Port-au-Prince 140 lieues. The garrison consists of a battalion of chasseurs. Mines of silver, iron and tin; the last alone is being worked; the silver mine, located to the east near the boundaries of Higuey, 30 lieues from Santo-Domingo, was worked by the Indians. Guava trees, icaco trees. Cattle. A good cheese is produced there, known under the name of Palo Hincado, from the name of the place where General Ferrand perished on 7 November 1808, when the inhabitants of the East had risen to drive out the French. Palo Hincado lies five kilometres west of Santa Cruz del Seibo. It was chiefly in this commune that this courageous insurrection began.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SANTA CRUZ del Seibo, ou SEIBO.
