Gatereau, editor of the Courrier du Cap, was arrested and hanged at the Morne-à-Coquilles, the first victim of the order to massacre the whites.

Haitian

The order was dispatched from on high, pure and simple, to massacre everyone. The first victim of this order was, at Les Cayes, Gatereau, a young man devoted to our cause. Married to a *mulâtresse* from the beginning of the revolution, he had defended our liberty in public writings. Editor in chief of the journal the Courrier du Cap, author of the Réponses aux libelles séditieux publiés contre les hommes de couleur and of several other remarkable works, he thought, in spite of his quality as a white man, to find security on our soil, which he loved and of which he considered himself one of the children (1). But the unfortunate man, against whom a colonel of cavalry, Bellefleur Lacoude, bore a grudge, was one fine morning, on 22 January (2), pursued by that officer, arrested, led to the gates of the town and hanged at the place called the Morne-à-Coquilles. In vain some Black women and women of color, among whom was the lady Adélaïde Mylord, great in charity, had tried to tear Gatereau from the hands of his henchmen.
