Five surviving senators, convened by Pétion on 17 February, meet at Port-au-Prince.

Pétion, unfortunately for his glory, to the great astonishment of the intelligent men of his time, convened the Senate on 17 February. This body, if one could go on giving it that name, met on the 20th, to the number of five members: Fresnel, Leroux, Larose, Neptune and Voltaire. That was skill, perhaps, on Pétion’s part; greatness it assuredly was not; but what hero is there to whom History cannot reproach some failing?
