Five ships sail for Castile with about 600 captive Taíno

Haitian

The five ships set sail on the 18th day of the month of October of that year of 498, in which my father went from this island to Castile, and underwent great trials and perils; they were, as has been said, loaded with Indians made captives; and there were 600 in all, and, for the freight of the rest, he gave the masters 200 captives. In them the Admiral wrote to the Sovereigns at great length, in two letters, giving them an account of the rebellion of Francisco Roldan and of those who had risen with him, of the damages they had done and were doing throughout the island, committing robberies and violences, and killing whom they pleased for nothing, taking other men’s wives and daughters, and perpetrating many other evils wherever they went; and he wrote them that he had been told that almost the whole western part of this island, which is where king Behechio reigned, which was called Xaraguá, they had greatly disturbed and ill-used: and I do not doubt it, and that it was much more than rumor could make it.
