EXTRACT of the Minister’s Letter to the Administrators, on the solemn burial of a hanged négresse

Haitian

In the affair that arose on the occasion of the burial of a négresse put to death, carried out with a sort of solemnity by Father Boutin, Jesuit, the conduct of this Religious cannot be approved. M. de la Chapelle did well, however, to forbid the Juges of the Cap to continue the proceedings they had begun on this subject, and at the same time to warn the Superior of the Jesuits to prevent such a thing from happening again. I have written for my part to Father de la Neuville, and I am persuaded that there will be no more incidents of the kind.
