Dessalines returned to Port-au-Prince and ordered the whites assembled, and Pétion, after a last plea to him, had his aides-de-camp Boyer, Mercier and Damestrois shelter as many victims as they could.

Haitian

Dessalines was, on 16 March, back at Port-au-Prince. The order was given to all the whites to assemble on the place du Gouvernement. Pétion, trembling at the thought of seeing the carnage of the South renewed in his native town, made a last effort with Dessalines to disarm his vengeance. But, seeing that this vengeance was unshakable, he recommended to his aides-de-camp Boyer, Mercier and Damestrois to cover with their protection as many victims as they could. To some he sent word not to leave their houses, to others to change their lodgings, to the greatest number to betake themselves to the Dalton house, rue Américaine, where he lived. Thus it was that the doctors Mirambeau, Pujol, Monnier, M. Charles Stiguy and many others owed their lives to him.
