Dessalines had Charles Belair and his wife arrested on the Tussac plantation; Belair was tried and shot at Cap on 13 vendémiaire Year XI (5 October 1802) and his wife was hanged.

Haitian

Happy to be in a position to glut the hatred he had conceived against Charles Belair, from the moment he had believed that Toussaint destined his political succession to him; already forgetting the exhortations of Pétion, he summoned Charles Belair to a conference on the Tussac plantation, in the plain of the Artibonite, had him arrested together with his wife, on 19 fructidor (6 September), conducted to the Gonaïves and embarked for the Cap, where the unfortunate general was tried and shot on 13 vendémiaire (5 October), at the same time that his companion was hanged. The collapse and the execution of Belair did not shake the insurgents of the Arcahaye: Larose and Lestrades, the latter a former lieutenant in the 7th, then an officer of gendarmerie, knew how to maintain themselves against all the forces directed from Port-au-Prince against them.
