DECREE of the Conseil of Petit-Goave, on the Trade in Goldsmith’s work and Sales by the Enslaved

Haitian

ON the Remonstrance made to the Conseil by the Procureur-Général du Roi, that he had received word that several Goldsmiths, established within the Jurisdiction of this Conseil, publicly buy from enslaved nègres materials of Gold or Silver, whether burned, in broken pieces, etc., which gave the said enslaved occasion to steal from their enslavers; that even several Individuals have complained that in the Silverware they bought or had made by the said Goldsmiths they found much of it bad through the alloy of other metals; which abuses it was necessary to prevent, for which he requested, etc.; the matter being put to deliberation, THE CONSEIL granted the Procureur-Général du Roi Record of his Remonstrance, and ruling on it has made and makes the most express inhibitions and prohibitions to all Goldsmiths and other persons against buying from enslaved nègres any Silverware, whether cracked, broken, burned or otherwise, in any manner whatever, without the express permission of their enslaver, on pain of 500 livres, and of greater penalty if called for.
