DECREE of the Conseil du Cap, which rules that a négresse who dies by Suicide before her Trial is held dies at the account of her enslaver

Having seen the Petition of the sieur Dominique de Vezien, stating that one of his négresses, named Marthe, cut her throat while returning from marronage, according to the declaration the Petitioner made of it, and her abandonment, on 13 and 28 April last; which authorized him to present his Petition to M. the Juge on the 28th of that month, upon which Petition no proceedings could be taken, because of the death of the said négresse, which occurred eight days after her arrival in the prisons of this Town; wherefore the Petitioner has recourse to him, that it may please him, having seen the documents attached, to order that he be paid the price of the said négresse from the Public funds. Having heard the Procureur-Général, the CONSEIL has dismissed the said sieur de Vezien from the claims of the present Petition.
