DECREE of the Conseil du Cap, which annuls several Liberties given by Will
ON the Remonstrance of the Procureur-Général du Roi, that the man named Geoffroi had given liberty to several nègres by his Will of 31 July 1706, which is very prejudicial to the Colony, THE CONSEIL, ruling on it, and having seen the Article on a like subject in a Letter written by M. Phelypeaux, Lieutenant-Général of the King’s Troops, Conseiller d’Etat Extraordinaire, Lieutenant-Général for His Majesty in the French Islands and Mainland of America, to M. le Comte d’Arquyan, then Commander in the Island of Grenada, dated 14 October 1711, which Article shall be registered at the Greffe of the Conseil, as it was at that of Grenada on 8 April last, has dismissed the said nègres from their claimed liberty. Accordingly it orders that the said nègres shall remain enslaved, and that they shall be sold for the benefit of His Majesty, the money from this to be remitted to whom it may concern. We have not found the Article of the Letter of M. de Phelypeaux. See the Ordinance of 15 August 1711, and the Decree of the Conseil d’Etat of 29 October 1713.
