DECREE of the Conseil d’Etat, concerning the Compagnie de Guinée

Haitian

THE KING having been informed that the Compagnie de Guinée, established by the Edict of the month of February 1685, has not satisfied, until now, the conditions on which His Majesty granted it the Privilege of trading on the Coasts of Africa, beyond the River of Sierra Leone, in that it has not brought to the French Islands of America the number of nègres that it bound itself to supply there each year, which has taken from the settlers the means of increasing their cultivation and extending their Commerce, and has thrown them into a scarcity which has attracted Foreigners there, whatever prohibitions have been made against allowing them to land at the Islands to trade; whereupon His Majesty wishing to provide, after having had presented to him the said Edict, the Decree of the Conseil of 12 April 1685, which names those who were to compose the said Company, most of whom are dead or in no condition to pursue its Commerce, the Memoirs of the Gouverneurs and Intendants of the Islands, on the need there is of nègres there.
