DECREE of the Conseil de Léogane, imposing 3 livres per head of nègres for the Maréchaussée

Haitian

THE CONSEIL, acting on the remonstrance of the Procureur Général du Roi; having heard the report of M. Branda, sitting Conseiller, and having had the Greffier of the Court read the Regulation establishing a Maréchaussée, dated 17 January 1739, by which His Majesty is to be petitioned to approve and confirm the articles contained in it and to be pleased to contribute in part to the expense needed for carrying out the said Regulation, which has been suspended until this day pending His Majesty’s orders; and Messieurs the Général and the Intendant having spoken and represented that the establishment and operation of the said Maréchaussées, as ordered by the said Regulation, had become, through the circumstances of the times, indispensably necessary for public safety, and that it was advisable to proceed at once to the imposition and levy needed to pay those employed in the said Maréchaussées and to put them into service, assuring the Court that the said Regulation and the imposition to be made for its execution will equally be approved by His Majesty.
