Cultivators of the Grand’Anse under Jason Domingon attacked Jérémie and were driven off by its citizens.
Haitian
The cultivators of the Grand’Anse, disquieted as to their rights as free men by intriguers who wished to profit by the civil troubles to arrive at fortune and honors, rise in insurrection and come, having at their head one Jason Domingon, a simple cultivator, on 8 January, to attack the town of Jérémie, then stripped of troops, for the 18th demi-brigade had left some days before for the West. In spite of this last circumstance, the citizens leap to their arms, fall upon the insurgents, kill a great number of them, drive back and scatter the rest far from the town, into the surrounding hills.
