Contract with Désiré Lefebvre for steamboats on the Artibonite

Haitian

On 19 September 1877, the government entered into a contract with M. Désiré Lefebvre, a Frenchman, for the establishment of a public steamboat service on the Artibonite, and granted him the concession of the State lands situated on both banks of the river for the cutting of timber. M. Lefebvre undertook to establish school farms where the State had the right to send 200 student farmers. The concessionaire ceded his rights shortly afterward to the Compagnie fluviale et agricole de l’Artibonite, having its head office in Paris. The offices, yards, forges and warehouses of the Company are at the Grande-Saline.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Artibonite (l’).
