Columbus reaches Santo Domingo after two and a half years away

… Both were very, very glad to see each other; asked about the state of the land, the Adelantado gave him an account of how Francisco Roldan was risen with 80 men, with all the rest that had passed on this island since he left it. What he would feel at such news there is little need to stress or recount. He departed from there Wednesday, 22 of August, and finally, with some difficulty because of the many currents and the breezes, which there are continual and contrary, he arrived at this port of Sancto Domingo, Friday, the last day of August of the said year 1498, having departed from the Isabela for Castile, Thursday, 10 days of the month of March, year of 1496. So that he took in returning to this island two years and a half less nine days.
