Columbus posts a general safe-conduct for Roldán’s followers at Santo Domingo
… and in future cases, should they occur, he promised that justice would deal with them humanely and mercifully, and he gave leave to those who wished to go to Castile, whenever they wished to go, and he would give them drafts for the wages owed them; and that they should come to enjoy this safe-conduct within sixteen days, those who were first, those following, and if any of them were more than 30 leagues away, they were bound to come within thirty days; where they did not come within the said terms, together or each by himself, he would proceed against them in the manner he found fitting for the service of Their Highnesses and his justice. And he commanded that it be proclaimed publicly and the said letter of safe-conduct be posted on the door of the fortress. It was made in this city of Sancto Domingo, which then stood on the other side of the river, on Friday, the 9th day of November of 1498.
