Columbus notes islets near Santo Tomás with good harbors but shoals

Haitian

… The ship can lie moored with any rope at all against whatever winds there may be. At the entrance of this harbor, so he says, there was a cañal, which lies to the west of a sand islet, with many trees on it, and up to its foot there are seven fathoms; but there are many shoals in that area, and one must keep one’s eyes open until entering the harbor: afterward let them not fear all the storms in the world. From that harbor could be seen a very great valley, all tilled, which comes down to it from the southeast, all ringed by very high mountains which seem to reach the sky, and most beautiful, full of green trees, and without doubt there are mountains there higher than the island of Tenerife in Canaria, which is held to be among the highest that can be found. On this side of the island of Santo Tomás lies another islet a league off, and inside it another, and in all of them there are marvelous harbors, but one must watch for the shoals. He saw also villages and smoke signals that were being made.
