Columbus names the harbor Santo Tomás for the saint’s day

Haitian

… So this harbor is very good for all the winds that may blow, enclosed and deep, and all peopled with very good and gentle people, without arms good or bad, and any ship can lie in it without fear that other ships may come by night to attack it, because although the mouth is quite wide, more than two leagues, it is closed tight by two reefs of stone that one hardly sees above water, except a very narrow entrance in this reef, which seems nothing other than made by hand, as if they had left an open door just as wide as the ships may enter. In the mouth there are seven fathoms of depth up to the foot of a flat islet which has a beach and trees at its foot; the entrance is on the west side, and a ship can come without fear until she lays her side against the rock. To the northwest there are three islands and a great river a league from the cape of this harbor: it is the best in the world; he named it the Puerto de la mar de Santo Tomás, because today was his day: he called it sea for its size.
