Columbus loses sight of Ayiti at the eastern Cabo del Engaño

Haitian

… They found two streams of very good water, but the Adelantado, they said, denied that there was water, so that the settlement of Sancto Domingo should not be hindered; the Adelantado went off to return by land to the Isabela, and the Admiral went his way. He went up toward the east with great difficulty because of the contrary east winds and the currents that hindered him, as far as the Cape of the island, which I believe is the one we now call the cabo del Engaño; and on Tuesday, the 22nd of March, he lost sight of the said Cape and of the land of this island, and in order to take on some caçabí (cassava bread) and provisions of food, because he had not taken as much from the Isabela as he would have needed, he wished to turn toward the south to take the islands in that quarter, and on the 9th of April, a Saturday, he anchored at the island of Marigalante.
