Columbus camps below a pass he names Puerto de Cibao

Haitian

He left that town and came to another beautiful river, so fresh that he named it the Rio Verde, the Green River. Its bed and bank were of smooth pebbles, all round or nearly round, which shone, and the rivers of Cibao are almost all of this kind. There all the people rested that night. The next day, Saturday, the 15th of March, he passed through some large towns, and the people of them, apart from those who stayed away, also put sticks across their doors so that no one would enter, as in the earlier towns. That night they came to the foot of a great pass which he named the Puerto de Cibao, because from the top of it the province of Cibao begins on that side, which is almost the last part of it, since behind them, on the left hand, toward the south, lies the greater part, and they were going along the part below the river Yaquí, where the road turned toward the north or Arctic pole. They made camp there, since the people on foot were already weary. They were about 11 leagues from the descent of the earlier pass which he named, counting from the climb up it when he left la Isabela, the pass of the Hidalgos.
