Columbus believes Baneque supplies the gold and feels near its source
… There that cacique showed much that he took the Admiral’s side. The canoe left at once, and after it had gone they told the Admiral that on Tortuga there was more gold than on the Isla Española, because it is nearer to Baneque. The Admiral said that he believed that there were no gold mines on that Isla Española nor on Tortuga, but that they brought it from Baneque, and that they bring little, because those people have nothing to give for it, and that land is so rich that they have no need to work much to sustain themselves nor to clothe themselves, since they go naked. And the Admiral believed that he was very near the source, and that our Lord was to show him where the gold is born. He had word that from there to Baneque there were four days’ journey, which might be 30 or 40 leagues, which could be sailed in one day of good weather.
