Christophe submits to Leclerc at Haut du Cap
On 26 April 1802 at 11 o’clock in the morning, Christophe had at the Haut du Cap an interview with General Leclerc, to whom he made his submission. Leclerc gave him the most flattering reception and kept him in his rank of brigadier general. After a short conversation, Christophe went to the Grande Rivière and to the Marmelade, where Toussaint Louverture had his headquarters. He urged Toussaint to take up hostilities no more, and gave him the assurance that France, after his submission, would treat him with honor and magnificence. Toussaint blamed him for having had an interview with Leclerc without his authorization and ordered him to return to his own headquarters. Christophe went again to the Haut-du-Cap at the head of 800 men, whom he made swear fidelity to France.
Rouzier tells this under the entry HAUT DU CAP (le).
