Christophe and Laplume take the Grand Fort at Jacmel and Auger retakes it
Haitian
Grand Fort (le). Fort at Jacmel, southeast of the town, on a rise whose foot is washed by the sea. On 5 January 1800, during the siege of Jacmel by the troops of Toussaint-Louverture, at midnight, the fort was attacked and taken by Christophe and Laplume. The officer Auger threw himself upon Christophe and retook the position. The troops of the North returned to the charge: Auger overthrew them again. Open on the landward side, this fort had been disarmed by Beauvais, who had recognized that it could serve only to defend the entrance to the roadstead.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Grand Fort (le).
