c. AD 1450 – 1500 (Ceramic Variation): While Palmetto Ware is the standard for the Bahamas, archaeologists have noted that the quality of the “shell temper” varies by island. In the southern Bahamas, closer to Hispaniola, the pottery often displays more sophisticated decorative modes borrowed from the Chicoid series, such as “D-shaped” handles and wedge-shaped adornos. This indicates that cultural influence was strongest at the points of most frequent maritime contact.
