c. AD 850 – 1309: The Juanpedro site in the Dominican Republic provides a detailed example of a large indigenous settlement with an estimated population of approximately 500 individuals. The village was organized around a cleared central plaza and featured a ring-shaped midden, or calzeda, created by the disposal of refuse from the surrounding houses. Archaeological remains from the site show an abundance of animal bones and pottery, primarily classified as Ostionoid. The size and structure of these villages suggest a highly organized social life focused on both communal ritual and large-scale agricultural production. This settlement pattern is characteristic of the shifting demographics and increasing sedentary life in the Greater Antilles during this period.
