c. AD 1200 – 1500: In the eastern Dominican Republic, specialized ceramic jars known as potizas became a hallmark of the Chicoid world. These jars were primarily used for the collection of water and the storage of manioc beer, which played a role in social and ritual gatherings. The production of these vessels reflects a high degree of craft specialization and a focus on functional items that also served as canvases for symbolic expression. Archaeologists use the presence of potizas to track the spread of Chicoid influence from its heartland in Hispaniola to neighboring islands. This ceramic tradition underscores the importance of communal consumption and resource management in Late Ceramic Age societies.
