c. AD 400 – 1000 (Artistic Traditions): The white-on-red (WOR) painting tradition is a diagnostic feature of the Early Ceramic Age (Saladoid) throughout the Caribbean. These elaborate designs, often featuring geometric patterns and zoomorphic motifs, were applied to high-status serving vessels. As societies transitioned into the Troumassoid and Ostionoid periods, this labor-intensive decoration was largely replaced by modeling and incision. Keegan and Hofman note that the decline of WOR painting represents a shift in how social identity and status were materialized, moving away from shared regional aesthetics toward more localized and diverse cultural expressions.
