c. AD 400 – 1400 (Resource Management): Zooarchaeological evidence from the Río Portugués in Puerto Rico reveals a sophisticated and long-term relationship between indigenous communities and their environment. Studies by G.R. DuChemin show that these groups managed a wide array of animal species for food, ritual, and tool production, including the husbandry of small mammals like the hutia. The transition from early to late periods at this site reflects an intensification of resource management and a structured approach to land use, which was essential for supporting the growing complexity of Puerto Rican social organizations.
