c. AD 400 – 1000: Archaeological excavations at the Sugar Factory Pier site on St. Kitts have provided critical data for understanding the lithic technology of the Saladoid period. Research by J.B. Walker involved the replication and analysis of stone artifacts to determine the techniques used by indigenous craftsmen to create functional tools. These studies show that the inhabitants of St. Kitts possessed a sophisticated understanding of local stone properties, allowing them to maintain a complex toolkit despite the island’s specific geological constraints. This research highlights the high degree of technical skill and adaptability present in Early Ceramic Age maritime societies.
