c. 1000 BC – AD 100 (Theory): The origins of the Meillacoid cultural tradition in the Dominican Republic are theorized to be rooted in a complex amalgamation of earlier “Preceramic” traditions and newly arriving horticultural influences. M. Veloz Maggiolo suggests that this was not a simple replacement of people but a process of “possible origins” where local groups adopted and adapted external technologies and social structures. This theoretical framework emphasizes the agency of the indigenous populations of Hispaniola in shaping their own cultural trajectory. Such a model challenges linear migration theories and highlights the internal social reconfigurations that eventually led to the rise of the “Classic Taíno” polities.
