c. AD 800 – 1000 (Theory): The Morel I site on Guadeloupe serves as a key case study for understanding the “Huecan Saladoid” problem, where distinct ceramic styles appear to coexist within the same region. Keegan and Hofman point to the work of Hofman, Hoogland, and Delpuech, which suggests that these different assemblages represent diverse social groups maintaining unique identities while living in close proximity. This cultural pluralism challenges the idea of a single, uniform migration wave into the Lesser Antilles. Instead, it points to a more complex social landscape where multiple traditions intersected and influenced one another. This perspective emphasizes the heterogeneity of early Caribbean horticultural societies.
