c. AD 400 – 1000 (Trade): Early Ceramic Age specialized production centers, such as the Hope Estate site on St. Martin, focused on manufacturing stone celts from local greenstone for export. These sites are identified by high concentrations of production debris, which are rarely found at the settlements that received the finished tools. Similar specialization occurred at the Pearls site on Grenada, where craftsmen produced amethyst beads for a regional prestige market. This separation of production and consumption sites demonstrates a sophisticated maritime economy based on craft monopolies and inter-island dependency.
