Brigade chief Mamzelle and captain Magloire Ambroise seized Sale-Trou and Marigot in the district of Jacmel, and many men of color were massacred there in the night of 22 to 23 messidor.

Haitian

Toussaint, in fact, himself uneasy at this neutrality of Beauvais, ordered two bandits, Brigade Chief Mamzelle and Captain Magloire Ambroise, to seize two cantons of the district of Jacmel, Sale-Trou and Marigot. Many *mulâtres* were massacred there in the night of 22 to 23 messidor (10 to 11 July) (1). Toussaint did not stop there; he sent Laplume, with the 11th, to occupy the Tavet plantation, at the gates of Jacmel. This town is stirred at the news of these events; the legionaries cry to arms! the alarm drum is beaten: they demand battle (2). Beauvais is obliged to send Borno Déléart, with six hundred men, against Marigot, which was retaken on 26 messidor (14 July) (3). He sends Birot, colonel of the Legion (1), to occupy the Besnard plantation, opposite Tavet. At the same time he complains to Toussaint as well as to Roume of the unjust aggressions of which he is the object. But he persists still in a neutrality that was to prove more fatal to him than war.
