Birth of Vergniaud Leconte, lawyer and historian of Cap-Haitien

Haitian

Vergniaud Leconte was born at Cap-Haitien on 22 May 1868, son of Alphonsine Noel and Cincinnatus Leconte. He and his two younger brothers were orphaned as adolescents; Vergniaud took over as head of the family and went to work for a trading house while studying at the Lycee Philippe Guerrier. He read law at the Ecole Libre de Droit founded by Tertulien Guilbaud in 1892. When Tiresias Simon Sam fell in 1902 the three brothers fought on the side of Nord Alexis against the Firminists at Limbe. Leconte became a lawyer, writer and historian. He died 7 October 1932.
