At a deserted Guadeloupe village the fleet finds macaws and ship timber
He departed from there the next day, Monday, and saw another large island, and to this he gave the name Guadalupe, and they approached it; and finding a port, they anchored, and he ordered certain boats to go to land, to see a small village that appeared on the coast by the sea, where they found no one, because, as they saw the ships, all its inhabitants fled to the mountains. There they found the first parrots that they called guacamayos, as large as roosters, of many colors, and the most of it is red, a little blue and white; these never screech or speak, but only now and then utter some ungainly cries, and are found only on the mainland, on the coast of Paria, and beyond. They found in the houses a timber of a ship, which the sailors call a quodaste, at which all marveled, and could not imagine how it had come there, unless the winds and seas had brought it there, either from the Canary islands, or from la Española, from the ship the Admiral lost there on the first voyage.
